Vol.10- The Test of Time

Attn: Fellow Drummers...

Can you handle.. The Test of Time??

dunno? what is it?

The TEST OF TIME is 85 specifically designed, challenging minus drums play along tracks, guaranteed to improve your groove!!

Volume 10 in the Turn it Up & Lay it Down series marks the tenth anniversary for this popular play along Cd series from DrumFun for drummers and percussionists.
While this theory was visited briefly in Vol.1, the Test of Time has built upon the "fill... fill... fill" idea that as a drummer you must be in control of the groove.
The 85 custom tracks in this 4 CD set will kick your butt and force you to play precisely and set your inner clock.
We strongly suggest that you record yourself and keep track your rehearsal progress.
Working out with these bread and butter grooves will give you the confidence you need to drive a band (and to be able to tell the guitar play if he's rushing or dragging and where in the song he's doing it).
The Groove IS most definitely King! and it's not always so easy to really get it....
You'll be able to practice and learn: phrasing and note placement, developing time feel, using your ears, tips for practicing, physical and mental techniques for subdividing during the space.

What you'll hear...

First you will hear a SUGGESTED drum set groove for 4 bars. Remember this is only one of many ways to play the track so please feel free to take liberties be creative just stay in the pocket. Less is more most of the time! Play it like you mean it!

Your job as a drummer is to listen closely to the song then play musically with a great feel.
Support the song with a strong groove without getting in the way of any of the music.. be that a vocal or a guitar lead or any other melody line. Listen very closely to all the instruments and then listen again to how they interact. then find you place in the music and lay it down! One day you may realize all of the good-feeling rhythm stuff falls between the beats not on them. The beat serves as a reference point around which other rhythms dance. If you want to groove, you need to develop a strong sense of where these divisions of the beat fall. This will take practice, time, and experience. It’s frustrating for many in the beginning. Be patient and practice. Eventually you will feel these subdivisions without a thought.

The four bar sample groove is immediately followed by a  2 bar count in. This may be a click or a shaker pattern or a cowbell.. either way it's the count IN...

The the song begins w/o drums.

The track will play long enough for you to get into a nice groove then the song will drop out! no click just dead air..
This is where the Test of Time challenge begins.
The idea is to keep playing that groove you've got going until the music starts playing (usually it comes in on the 1)
Sometimes it will drop out for 1 bar sometimes 2 or 3 or 4 maybe 5 or 6 it doesn't matter just keep playing your groove, nice and steady then BANG! here's the 1!
PLEEEZE Don't be discouraged if you find yourself off the beat. That is beauty of theses tracks you and play them over and over and they will never stray from the groove AND they will always tell on you if you do!!!

What do you get...?
85 specifically designed, challenging, crazy fun minus drums play along tracks guaranteed to set your internal clock!!

This is not super easy my friends, It is truly a challenge!
Truth is, when you get done mastering these tracks your time and your ability to
*subdivide will be a force to be reckoned with!!!

*Subdividing the beat means to play at the rhythmic points in-between the beats. This is an essential skill for all musicians and a critical one for all rhythm section players including us drummers ,them bass players and keyboard guys and those damn guitar heroes. If you can't correctly play the subdivisions of the beat, you will cause unending problems for everyone in the band.
A beat can be subdivided in numerous ways. Most commonly beats are evenly divided in two, in four, or in three.
Each beat is a quarter note and there are 4 quarter notes in a whole measure, or bar, of 4/4 music.
When you evenly divide the quarter note beat in two, you get two eighth notes.
When you evenly divide the quarter note beat in four, you get four sixteenth notes.
Another common way to divide the beat is into three evenly spaced notes called eighth note triplets.
Triplets are grouped together with a beam or bracket and have the number 3 written over or under them.
You will groove and Groove is King!!!
Can you handle it? I know you can.

Have fun and Play well!

All the best
Spence

My overall review: What a concept!  This is a great way to test and improve a drummer’s “groove-worthiness!”  Sometimes it is not obvious how “off” you can get when you are not being led by the other players and your groove skills are not up to par.  There is no getting away with it with this “Test of Time” concept. Plus with the possibilities of recording along with the tracks, there is no denial, a recording is better than a thousand words.  Excellent, multi-genre, well put together tracks, by obviously skilled musicians with easy follow-along mapping charts! -Sean Cloud
Why didn’t you think of this sooner?

Spence –I tried these out on six of my students and, as advertised, great concept.  I allowed them to see for themselves how easy it is to get off track.  I even recorded a couple and allowed them to listen to where they “lost” the groove.  I told them all that these would be available in the near future and strongly urged them to purchase this resource.

Spence,

AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!!!

I love it. I am just listening through the tracks and think they are fantastic and such a great idea as I said when you told me about it. I picked a random tune (Loop Pool) and love that lazy swing funk feel it has, so I think that will be my first pick.
I have to record a drum track for Iron Maiden's Phantom Of The Opera first (for a guitarist back in the UK and his band) and then I will get this one done. Like before I will send you an mp3 and if you like will do the video for youtube.
Thanks again for letting me preview these - the volumes are simply getting better and better. The trouble now Spence is where do you go from here? ;-)

Bloody marvelous!

Stephan
